Frederick V, Elector Palantine, (1816). Artist: Charles Turner
Frederick V, Elector Palantine, (1816). Frederick, Elector Palatine (1610-1623) was offered the crown of Bohemia when the kingdoms Protestant Diet deposed the Catholic King Ferdinand II, the Holy Roman Emperor. Frederick accepted, and was crowned in Prague in November 1619. Unfortunately for Frederick, he did not receive the support he expected from his father-in-law King James I of England and the Protestant League, an alliance of German states, and he was defeated and overthrown at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. The brevity of his reign earned him the derisive title of the Winter King. A print from Fifteen Splendid Portraits of Royal Personages, engraved in mezzotinto by Richard Earlom, Charles Turner and R Dunkarton, printed by J McCreery, Black Horse Court, Fleet Street, London, 18161

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the portrait of Frederick V, Elector Palatine, created by the talented artist Charles Turner in 1816. The image captures the essence of a man who experienced both triumph and tragedy during his reign. Frederick V's story unfolds against the backdrop of political turmoil in Bohemia during the 17th century. When offered the crown after King Ferdinand II was deposed by Protestant forces, Frederick accepted and was crowned in Prague in 1619. However, his hopes for support from his father-in-law, King James I of England, and other Protestant allies were dashed when he faced defeat at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. The brevity of Frederick's rule earned him the derisive title "the Winter King". Yet this portrait reveals a dignified monarch on horseback, clad in regal armor that symbolizes his position as a sovereign leader. His majestic presence is accentuated by his flowing beard and commanding gaze. Through this print, we glimpse into an era marked by religious conflict and power struggles. It serves as a reminder of how individuals like Frederick V navigated treacherous political landscapes while striving to uphold their beliefs. Charles Turner's masterful depiction immortalizes Frederick V as more than just a historical figure; it captures his resilience and determination amidst adversity. This print invites us to reflect upon the complex nature of leadership and reminds us that even kings are not immune to challenges that shape their destinies.
