EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print from 1913 showcases the enchanting French actress, dancer, and singer, Gaby Deslys, in a series of sumptuous outfits designed by the renowned fashion designer Drian and brought to life by the skilled hands of Landolff. The images were featured in the same issue of The Tatler as a portrait of Princess Augusta Victoria of Hohenzollern, who was then engaged to the ex-King Manuel of Portugal. Gaby Deslys, known for her magnetic stage presence and charisma, had previously been linked romantically with the King. The photograph captures Gaby in various poses, each outfit more lavish than the last. The first image finds her in an elegant evening gown, adorned with intricate beading and a flowing train. In the second, she dons a vibrant red number, complete with a feather headdress, evoking the passion and allure of the exotic dancer she often portrayed on stage. The final image shows her in a playful street scene, clad in a flowing white gown and holding a parasol, a stark contrast to the opulence of the previous outfits. The costumes, designed by Drian and brought to life by Landolff, were created for Gaby's latest revue at the Palace Theatre in London, titled "A la Carte in Two Cafes and a Street." The revue was a smash hit, with Gaby's performances leaving audiences in awe of her talent and captivated by her beauty. This photograph serves as a testament to the power of fashion and the art of performance, showcasing the collaboration between designer, artist, and muse that resulted in some of the most memorable costumes of the era.
