Denby Grange, c1880 - A Glimpse into the Past
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the enchanting Denby Grange Hall, nestled in the picturesque countryside near Wakefield in Yorkshire. The seat of the Baronets of Grange and later owned by the Lister-Kaye family, this stately home exudes grandeur and history. The image showcases a beautifully engraved frontispiece from Francis Orpen Morris' renowned work "A Series of Picturesque Views of Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen of Great Britain". Created by an unknown artist in the 19th century, it captures Denby Grange Hall's splendor against a backdrop of lush woodlands and meandering River Colne. Once a thriving estate with its own colliery, Denby Grange Hall sadly met its demise in the 1950s when it was demolished. However, through this remarkable print, we can still appreciate its architectural magnificence and imagine life within its walls during that era. The vibrant colors bring out every intricate detail - from the elegant building itself to the surrounding forest teeming with wildlife. It is easy to envision fox hunting expeditions taking place on these grounds as part of traditional country pursuits. As we gaze upon this historical gem captured by Benjamin Fawcett's skilled hand, we are transported back to a time when Denby Grange Hall stood proudly as a symbol of nobility and grace amidst West Yorkshire's scenic beauty.
