EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the vibrant streets of Fowey, Cornwall in August 1992. The occasion? The crowning of Fowey Carnival Queens, a momentous event that brought together an esteemed group of Cornish Town Criers and their wives. At the heart of this gathering stands Michael Penprase, Foweys' very own Crier, who extended a warm invitation to his fellow criers from across Cornwall. Adorned in their traditional regalia, complete with tricorn hats and carrying maces, these civic dignitaries exude a sense of pride and heritage. The line-up showcases the diversity within this unique profession: Neville Hogarth representing Newquay; Monty Newton proudly representing St Columb Major; Derek Amphlett standing tall for Millbrook; Bill Doe embodying Lostwithiel's spirit; Rob Tremain bringing Launceston's voice to life; Tim Corkhill lending his booming voice from Looe, and Nick Prideaux adding Padstow's charm into the mix. Captured in the picturesque grounds of Fowey Hall by photographer Jonathan Barker, this image encapsulates not only the rich history but also the camaraderie shared among these town criers. Their presence adds a touch of grandeur to an already enchanting carnival celebration. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, it serves as a reminder of our collective heritage and how traditions like these continue to shape our cultural identity.
