Joseph Babinski, French neurologist

Joesph Babinski (1857-1932), French neurologist. Babinski is best known for discovering Babinskis sign, a reflex where the big toe extends and flexes toward the top of the foot and the other toes fan out when the sole of the foot is firmly stroked. This reflex is abnormal in children greater than two years of age, and is indicative of nervous system disorders. Babinski worked at the Hopital de Salpetriere and later at the Hopital de la Pitie in Paris, France. His publications include works on typhoid and hysteria, and his name is associated with many other medical conditions
