Animals Zebras - Rufus To The Rescue - A Joyful Moment at Marwell Zoo
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from September 22nd, 1977, we witness a heartwarming event that brought immense joy to the visitors of Marwell Zoo in Hants. After the unfortunate loss of Victor the giraffe just a day before, people longed for something uplifting to restore their spirits. And on that fateful Wednesday, their wishes were granted with the arrival of a beautiful baby zebra. This adorable foal was promptly named Rufus after Ruth Giles, Victor's dedicated keeper who had poured her love into caring for him. Owner John Knowles explained that "Rufus is the nearest to an equivalent male name that we could think of". With his striking stripes and playful demeanor, Rufus quickly became an instant favorite among both zoo staff and visitors alike. The image captures Rufus in all his youthful glory as he explores his new surroundings under the watchful eye of his mother. This precious moment serves as a reminder of nature's resilience and its ability to bring happiness even amidst sorrow. Decades may have passed since this photograph was taken, but its timeless charm continues to captivate viewers today. It stands as a testament to the enduring bond between humans and animals while preserving cherished memories from Marwell Zoo's rich history.
