Attorney Frederick Nephew Sire

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Frederick Thesiger (1810-1880), an esteemed English lawyer and statesman, is depicted in this striking portrait painted in 1852. Thesiger's illustrious family history is evident in the portrait, as he is the son of Charles Thesiger, Esq., who held the prestigious position of Collector of Customs in the island of St. Vincent. Furthermore, Thesiger is the nephew of Sir Frederick Thesiger, who gained notoriety for his service as Aide-de-Camp to Lord Nelson during the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. Born into a family with a rich legacy, Sir Frederick Thesiger pursued a successful career in law and politics. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1835 and was appointed Attorney-General in 1858, a position he held until 1866. During his tenure as Attorney-General, Thesiger played a significant role in several high-profile cases, including the trial of the Chartist leaders in 1848 and the case of Queen v. Leese in 1854, which established the principle of the "innocent purchaser" in English property law. Thesiger's political career began in earnest when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Malton in 1847. He went on to hold various cabinet positions, including Secretary of State for War and the Colonies and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Thesiger's dedication to public service and his legal expertise made him a respected figure in Victorian England. This portrait, painted in 1852, captures Sir Frederick Thesiger in the prime of his career, with an air of confidence and intelligence that reflects his accomplishments and potential for future success.
