Roman Chariot Races at the British Empire Exhibition
The Great Circus at Wembley - The Thrilling Roman Chariot Races at Wembley Stadium. A new thrill for visitors to the British Empire Exhibition, based on the races in the famous Circus Maximus in Rome at the time of the emperor. The races, organised by Messrs Ginnett and Robertson, comprised 400-500 performers taking part in each of two daily performances of this mammoth circus in the stadium. Depicted by Fortunino Matania, special artist for The Sphere who drew many historical reconstructions (even though this is a contemporary illustration of an actual historical reconstruction!). Date: 1925

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time and experience the thrilling excitement of ancient Rome at the British Empire Exhibition's Great Circus at Wembley Stadium. This photograph captures the Roman Chariot Races, a new and exhilarating spectacle for visitors to the exhibition. Inspired by the famous races held in Circus Maximus during the Roman Empire, these races were meticulously reconstructed by Messrs Ginnett and Robertson. The image, skillfully drawn by Fortunino Matania, special artist for The Sphere, depicts the chaos and energy of the chariot races. With 400-500 performers taking part in each of the two daily performances, the stadium came alive with the sound of hooves pounding against the ground and the roar of the crowd. The horses and chariots, reminiscent of the ancient Roman originals, charge forward in a cloud of dust, their riders determined to cross the finish line first. The atmosphere is electric, as the spectators, dressed in their finest attire, watch in awe and excitement. Despite being a contemporary illustration of an actual historical reconstruction, the detail and authenticity of the scene are truly remarkable. The Roman Chariot Races at Wembley Stadium were a testament to the power and grandeur of the Roman Empire and provided a thrilling and unforgettable experience for all who attended.
