This striking image captures Count Matthew Platov, Hetman of the Cossacks, in the year 1818. Platov, born in 1765, was a prominent military leader and statesman in the Russian Empire during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He rose to prominence as a Cossack ataman (leader) and was later appointed Hetman of the Don Cossacks in 1805.
