EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Albert Massard after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre for Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825, showcases three remarkable shark species: the White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias), the Nurse Shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum), and the Blue Shark (Prionace glauca). The White Shark, also known as the White Pointer or the Great White, is the largest predatory shark in the world, with an average length of 12 to 15 feet and a maximum recorded length of over 20 feet. Its iconic status is due to its size, power, and the myths and legends that have surrounded it for centuries. Its body is a uniform white color on the ventral side, while the dorsal side is a darker grey. The Nurse Shark, also known as the Carpet Shark or the Sand Shark, is a bottom-dwelling species, commonly found in shallow waters of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Oceans. It is named for its habit of resting on the ocean floor, often in shallow water, and nursing on mollusks and crustaceans. The Nurse Shark is easily identified by its distinctive pectoral fins, which are broad and flat, allowing it to rest on the bottom. The Blue Shark, also known as the Prussian Blue Shark, is a pelagic species, found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It is characterized by its slender body, long pectoral fins, and distinctive blue coloration. The Blue Shark is an active, agile predator, capable of swimming at speeds up to 25 miles per hour. It feeds primarily on squid and fish. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the natural history artistry of the 19th century, providing a glimpse into the world of these fascinating and powerful marine creatures.
