EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-coloured copperplate engraving depicts the Reflexed-leaved Lychnidea, or Phlox reflexa, a beautiful and intricately detailed flowering plant. The engraving is based on a botanical illustration by Edward Dalton Smith, which was published in Robert Sweet's renowned horticultural book, "The British Flower Garden," in 1827. Phlox reflexa is a member of the Polemoniaceae family and is native to North America. It is characterized by its distinctive reflexed, or turned-back, leaves, which give the plant its common name. The plant produces clusters of fragrant, pink, purple, or white flowers, which bloom in late spring and early summer. The intricate detail of the engraving allows us to appreciate the delicate beauty of the Reflexed-leaved Lychnidea in all its glory. The veins on the leaves are clearly visible, as are the tiny hairs that cover the stems and undersides of the leaves. The flowers are depicted in full bloom, with their intricately textured petals and stamens visible. Botanical illustrations and engravings like this one were an essential part of the scientific community during the 18th and 19th centuries. They allowed botanists and horticulturists to accurately document and identify new plant species, and were also used to create accurate records of existing plants for conservation and cultivation purposes. This particular engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of the botanical illustrator and engraver, as well as the dedication of Robert Sweet and his contemporaries to documenting the natural world. The intricate details and vibrant colours bring the Reflexed-leaved Lychnidea to life, making it a true work of art as well as a valuable scientific record.
