EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock after Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (The Butterflies in Representations according to Nature), published in Erlangen in 1786, showcases an intriguing assembly of moths, including four specimens of Pharmacis carna, also known as the Carna Tiger Moth or the Carna Swift Moth. The orange swift moth (Triodia sylvina) and the gold swift moth (Phymatopus hecta) are also depicted in this illustration. The Pharmacis carna moths display their distinctive orange and black wings, with the orange hue more pronounced in the third and fourth specimens. These moths are native to Europe and Asia, and their larvae feed on various plants, such as willows and poplars. During the metamorphosis process, they transform from caterpillars into these striking adult moths. The orange swift moth (Triodia sylvina) is a small, agile moth with orange wings adorned with black veins and a distinctive white stripe along the leading edge. The gold swift moth (Phymatopus hecta) is another small, swift-flying moth, with golden-yellow wings and black markings. This engraving is a testament to the meticulous detail and artistry of 18th-century entomology. It not only captures the beauty of these moths but also contributes to the scientific understanding of their morphology and classification. The intricate patterns and colors of their wings are faithfully rendered, providing a glimpse into the natural world that fascinated naturalists and collectors of the era.
