EDITORS COMMENTS
Men in Regency-era attire experience a series of mishaps on a frozen pond as they attempt to enjoy a day of ice skating. In the foreground, two men in top hats and frock coats struggle to keep their footing, one of them slipping and falling onto the ice. Another man, further out on the ice, breaks through the thin surface, plunging into the frigid water below. A woman in a bonnet and shawl, seated in a chair nearby, loses her balance and tumbles to the ground. This handcoloured copperplate engraving, designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson, was created to accompany Reverend James Beresford's collection "The Miseries of Human Life," published by Ackermann in 1808. The image satirically captures the misadventures and misfortunes that can arise even in seemingly innocent pastimes. The scene takes place on a causeway by a river, with passengers disembarking from a rowboat and sailboat in the background. Muddy banks and a winding river add to the sense of unpredictability and potential danger. The intricate details of the clothing, the expressions on the faces of the falling men, and the woman's surprised look all add to the humorous and relatable nature of the image. Rowlandson's skilled use of line and shading, combined with the vibrant handcolouring, bring the scene to life and transport the viewer back to the Georgian era. This and charming illustration offers a glimpse into the past, reminding us that even in the most ordinary of activities, there is always the potential for the unexpected.
