This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelms Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases three fascinating marine creatures: the herring (Clupea harengus) and the oarfish (Regalecus species). The herring, a small to medium-sized fish, is depicted swimming gracefully in the foreground, its silver scales shimmering in the water. The oarfish, a deep-sea dweller and one of the longest bony fish, is shown in the background, its elongated body and dorsal fin resembling the oar of a boat.
