EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Dwarf Bog Dwarf Cyclanthus, or Cyclanthus bipartitus, also known as Cyclanthe a deux feuilles. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The meticulous and intricate engraving was executed by Dion, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Cyclanthus bipartitus is a small, herbaceous plant native to Central and South America. It is commonly found in bogs and wetlands, growing among mosses and other vegetation. The plant's leaves are bipartite, or divided into two parts, giving it its specific epithet, bipartitus. The small, white flowers of the Cyclanthus bloom in clusters and are followed by edible, red or purple fruits. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in his work. This engraving showcases his skill and artistry, capturing the intricacies of the Cyclanthus bipartitus in exquisite detail. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the image, making it a true masterpiece of botanical illustration.
