EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken around 1920, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (1900-2002), later known as the Queen Mother, is seen with her father, the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (1844-1917), in their family estate in Scotland. The Earl, dressed in the uniform of a Major-General in the British Army, proudly stands next to his daughter, who wears a simple yet elegant dress and a small hat. The Earl's military career spanned over four decades, and he served in several campaigns, including the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Second Boer War. His military accomplishments earned him numerous decorations, including the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British honors system. Lady Elizabeth, who would later become the Queen Consort of King George VI, was known for her grace, intelligence, and her unwavering support for her husband and the British monarchy during difficult times. This photograph captures a moment of familial affection and pride, as well as a glimpse into the history of the British royal family and their military traditions. The Earl's uniform, with its intricate details and insignia, serves as a reminder of his military accomplishments and the role of the British monarchy in the country's military history. The image also highlights the strong bond between a father and his daughter, who would go on to become one of the most beloved and respected figures in British history.
