EDITORS COMMENTS
Hyde Park Corner, a iconic London landmark and a bustling hub of activity, is depicted in this beautiful vintage photograph published in the year of King George V's coronation, 1910. The image captures the grandeur and elegance of the corner, with its ornate archway and stately Boadicea on her horse, flanked by four lion guardians. The scene is further enhanced by the inclusion of inset portraits of King George V and Queen Mary (of Teck), adding a regal touch to the image. King George V, born in 1865, ascended to the throne following the death of his father, King Edward VII, in 1910. He is depicted in his formal coronation robes, wearing the Imperial State Crown and holding the scepter and orb. Queen Mary, born in 1865, was the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Teck and was the first monarch to be crowned in the Abbey Church of St. Peter and St. Paul at Westminster Abbey. She is shown in her coronation robes, wearing the Imperial State Crown and holding the Sovereign's Orb. The photograph also features several cabs, or taxis, parked at the corner, adding to the hustle and bustle of the scene. The bollards lining the streets add a sense of order and control, while the horse-drawn carriages and elegant automobiles add to the sense of history and tradition. Overall, this photograph is a beautiful snapshot of London life in the early 20th century, with its rich blend of history, royalty, and everyday life.
