1727 Gertrude Halifax Marchioness Marquess

EDITORS COMMENTS
This elegant portrait captures Gertrude Mss. Halifax, the second wife of George, First Marquess of Halifax, in the height of 18th century fashion. Gertrude, whose maiden name was Pierrpoint, was born into a prominent English family and is believed to have been born around the turn of the century. Her marriage to George, the Marquess of Halifax, took place in 1719, making her the Marchioness of Halifax. The Marquess of Halifax was a prominent figure in English politics, serving as Lord Privy Seal and Lord President of the Council under King George I. Gertrude's marriage to the Marquess brought her into the inner circles of power and influence in English society. This portrait, likely painted around the time of her marriage, showcases Gertrude's refined beauty and sophistication. She is dressed in the latest fashion of the day, with a low-cut bodice and a voluminous skirt, adorned with intricate lace and ribbons. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, piled high on her head, and her expression is serene and confident. Despite her prominent position in society, Gertrude's life was not without tragedy. She lost her husband in 1727, just eight years into their marriage. The Marquess died suddenly at his country estate in Wentworth Woodhouse, leaving Gertrude a widow at a relatively young age. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of Gertrude's brief but significant time as the Marchioness of Halifax, a woman of beauty, grace, and political influence in the early 18th century English court.
