Lord Mayors Show - the Man in Brass, 1844. Creator: Stephen Sly
Lord Mayors Show - the Man in Brass, 1844. Procession during the annual public parade to celebrate the inauguration of the Lord Mayor of the City of London. Members of the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers display weapons and armour. The man in brass is not a man in armour at all, as the brazen envelope is of no period, and could not be worn in action. He is said, by courtesy, to be dressed in scale armour but the scales are more of the braziers than the armourers fancy. He is, however, a very grand fellow, and much admired by the people. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment from the Lord Mayor's Show in 1844, an annual public parade celebrating the inauguration of the Lord Mayor of the City of London. Created by Stephen Sly, this engraving showcases members of the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers proudly displaying their weapons and armor. Intriguingly, amidst this display stands a figure known as "the Man in Brass". Contrary to his title, he is not adorned in functional armor but rather enveloped in a brazen costume that defies historical accuracy. Courtesy dictates that he be referred to as dressed in scale armor, although these scales are more fanciful creations of the braziers than authentic armory. Nevertheless, despite his unconventional attire, this grand fellow commands admiration from onlookers. Mounted on horseback with banners fluttering behind him, he epitomizes pageantry and tradition. The crowd marvels at his regal presence during this procession through the streets of London. Stephen Sly's illustration was originally featured in "Illustrated London News" back in 1844 when it first captivated readers with its depiction of this unique character within an event steeped in history and heritage. This image serves as a reminder that even amid centuries-old traditions like those found within livery companies and guilds, there is room for creativity and imagination. With its intricate details capturing both warlike elements and Victorian elegance, this print transports viewers back to a time when such processions were eagerly anticipated events showcasing British pride and unity.
