EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Larry Gains, a renowned Canadian boxer in 1938. As a heavyweight fighter, Gains left an indelible mark on the boxing world with his impressive record of 114 wins, 23 losses, and 5 draws out of the remarkable total of 142 fights he participated in throughout his career. Gains first claimed the Canadian title back in 1927 and later triumphed over Phil Scott in Leicester during 1931 to become the British Empire champion. He successfully defended his Empire title three times before eventually surrendering it to Len Harvey from Cornwall in 1934. Despite two subsequent attempts to regain the belt against Jack Petersen from Wales and Harvey once again, both efforts ended without success. In this monochrome portrait captured by The Print Collector for Churchmans Cigarettes picture card series, Gains exudes strength and determination as he poses confidently dressed in traditional boxing attire. This image not only immortalizes a sports personality but also represents an era when boxing was at its peak. Larry Gains' legacy as a formidable fighter continues to inspire generations of athletes worldwide. His contributions to Canadian and British Empire boxing history remain unparalleled even today.
