Landscape, 1808. Creator: Chikuto Nakabayashi (Japanese, 1776-1853)
Landscape, 1808. The Nanga, or " Southern School" painters of 17th- and 18th-century Japan were greatly influenced by Chinese culture. The subjects and styles of their work reflected the contemporary Japanese taste for imported Chinese objects and learning. A common practice among Nanga painters was the exchange of small paintings and calligraphies. They also celebrated special gatherings of artist-friends by producing individual sheets that were then gathered together in albums. The sheets shown here were part of such a gathering

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Chikuto Nakabayashi, a prominent Japanese artist from the late 18th to early 19th century. Titled "Landscape, 1808" this piece exemplifies the influence of Chinese culture on the Nanga painters of Japan during that era. The Nanga school was deeply inspired by imported Chinese objects and knowledge, which is evident in their choice of subjects and artistic styles. One fascinating aspect of their practice was exchanging small paintings and calligraphies among fellow artists. They also commemorated special gatherings by creating individual sheets that were later compiled into albums. The delicate ivory silk canvas serves as a perfect backdrop for Nakabayashi's masterful use of ink and color. The landscape depicted transports viewers to a serene natural setting, evoking feelings of tranquility and harmony with nature. This particular print captures several sheets from one such gathering, showcasing Nakabayashi's talent alongside his artist-friends' works. It offers us a glimpse into the vibrant artistic community during Japan's Edo period (1615-1868). Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable piece stands as a testament to both Japanese artistry and cultural exchange between China and Japan at that time. Its inclusion in Heritage Art/Heritage Images collection ensures its legacy will be cherished for generations to come.
