Benjamin Franklin, American scientist, inventor and statesman, late 18th century

Benjamin Franklin, American scientist, inventor and statesman, late 18th century. Franklin (1706-1790) was a member of the committee which drafted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Trained as a printer, first in his familys firm in Boston, and later in England, he became a notable publisher but is now better known as one of the founders of the science of electricity. Franklin became interested in the principles of electricity in 1747 and published Experiments and Observations on electricity in London in 1751. He was responsible for several inventions, including the lightning conductor and bifocal spectacles, which did away with the need to keep changing from one pair of glasses to another

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Benjamin Franklin, a prominent figure in American history during the late 18th century. Known for his diverse talents as a scientist, inventor, and statesman, Franklin played a crucial role in drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Originally trained as a printer within his family's firm in Boston and later refining his skills in England, he eventually gained recognition as an esteemed publisher. However, it is through his groundbreaking contributions to the science of electricity that Franklin truly left an indelible mark. His fascination with electrical principles began in 1747 and led him to publish "Experiments and Observations on Electricity" in London by 1751. Among his notable inventions were the lightning conductor and bifocal spectacles - innovations that revolutionized safety measures against lightning strikes and eliminated the need for constantly switching between different pairs of glasses. In this black-and-white portrait engraving, we see Franklin seated comfortably on a chair wearing a fur hat while donning spectacles. The image captures both his intellectual prowess and political influence as he dedicated himself to advancing scientific knowledge alongside shaping America's future. As one of the founding fathers of the United States of America, Benjamin Franklin's legacy extends far beyond any single profession or occupation. This print serves as a reminder of his multifaceted brilliance that forever shaped our understanding of science, politics, and innovation.
