Allegory of Carnal Love, c. 1530. Creator: Cristofano Robetta (Italian, 1462-after 1534)

Allegory of Carnal Love, c. 1530. Trained as a goldsmith in Florence, Robetta also made engravings, primarily of biblical and mythological narratives. Perhaps an allegory involving themes of physical love, fertility, and mortality, the message of this frieze-like scene is not clear. Cupid, the only easily identified mythical figure, binds the central mans arm to a tree, suggesting he is loves captive. Long sashes of cloth entangle the groups of men and women, including the androgynous figure on the far left. The children suggest the fertility of life, although one boy steps on a skull, a reminder of the inevitability of death

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic artwork titled "Allegory of Carnal Love" created by Cristofano Robetta in the early 16th century. Trained as a goldsmith in Florence, Robetta's artistic talent extended to engraving biblical and mythological narratives. The meaning behind this frieze-like scene remains ambiguous, possibly alluding to themes of physical love, fertility, and mortality. At the center of the composition stands Cupid, easily recognizable as the mythical figure who binds a man's arm to a tree—a symbolic representation of being captive to love. Surrounding them are groups of men and women entangled by long sashes of cloth, their purpose open to interpretation. Notably, an androgynous figure on the far left adds another layer of intrigue. The presence of children within this allegorical piece suggests life's inherent fertility; however, one boy stepping on a skull serves as a stark reminder that death is inevitable for all living beings. Preserved through time, this remarkable engraving invites viewers into its mysterious narrative while showcasing Robetta's skillful craftsmanship. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art in Italy during the 20th century when it was captured by Heritage Art/Heritage Images' lens—this photograph print allows art enthusiasts worldwide to appreciate and ponder upon this intriguing masterpiece from centuries past.
