EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Sanglin, or Cagui Minor" transports viewers to the world of natural history in the 18th century. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print is a fusion of two renowned works: Edwards' "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". The intricate details captured in this illustration showcase Seligmann's talent as an engraver, illustrator, and art dealer from Nuremberg. The Sanglin, also known as Cagui Minor Brasiliensium s. Sagouin Clusii, takes center stage amidst a backdrop of lush foliage. As we admire this piece, it becomes evident that Seligmann not only translated names into German but also added his own touch to enhance the original plates. Additional figures and plants not present in the originals further enrich our understanding of these exotic creatures. "The Sanglin" invites us to explore the diverse realm of birds and mammals through its meticulous depiction. From its vibrant colors to its lifelike portrayal, every aspect contributes to our appreciation for nature's wonders. Displayed within a private collection today, this print serves as a testament to both Edwards' expertise in capturing uncommon birds and Seligmann's skillful reinterpretation. It stands as a timeless reminder that art has the power to bridge gaps between cultures while celebrating the beauty found within our natural world.
