EDITORS COMMENTS
Standing at the edge of Lake Abbe, on the border of Djibouti and Ethiopia, it's easy to feel like you're standing at the edge of the world. The harsh, windswept landscape stretches out before you like an otherworldly expanse, with nary a tree or blade of grass in sight. Yet, amidst this barren beauty lies a thriving ecosystem that has been home to nomadic Afar people for centuries.
In this surreal landscape, livestock roam freely - goats and sheep grazing on the sparse vegetation that clings to life in this semi-desert environment. The air is thick with dust and salt from the lake's alkaline waters, which are actually a remnant of ancient volcanic activity. Fumaroles dot the horizon, emitting steam into the dry air as if exhaling from some primordial beast.
As you gaze out upon this breathtaking vista, it's hard not to be struck by both its desolation and its beauty. This is a land where nature has sculpted earth pinnacles and spires that seem almost extraterrestrial in their grandeur. And yet, despite its harsh conditions, Lake Abbe remains a vital source of sustenance for those who call it home - a testament to human resilience in one of Africa's most unforgiving environments.
