Early Morning at the Dark Hedges: A Photographic Journey by Derek Smyth As the first light of dawn crept over the Antrim countryside, Derek Smyth set off on an adventure to capture the enchanting beauty of the Dark Hedges in all its autumnal glory. With the sun still hidden beneath the horizon, he braved the early morning chill and set off from Armoy towards the Bregagh Road, eager to witness the iconic avenue of beech trees in its full autumnal splendor. The air was thick with the promise of a misty morning, and as he approached the Dark Hedges, the mist began to swirl around him, enveloping the trees in a mystical veil. Anticipation filled Derek as he imagined the ethereal scene that lay before him. But as fate would have it, just as he arrived at the site, the mist began to clear, revealing the sun-kissed trees bathed in the warm morning sunlight. Undeterred, Derek seized the opportunity to capture the scene before him. The sunlight filtering through the golden leaves of the beech trees cast a warm, inviting glow over the landscape, transforming the Dark Hedges into a breathtaking tableau of autumn colours. The sun's rays illuminated the winding road, creating a sense of tranquility and serenity that belied the bustling tourist activity that would soon follow. As Derek clicked away, he couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. He had set out early, determined to capture the moody, atmospheric beauty of the Dark Hedges shrouded in mist. Though the conditions had not been ideal, he had managed to create a stunning photograph that showcased the natural beauty of this iconic Northern Irish landmark in a new light.
